کانن برای رسیدن به بدنه کوچک‌تر مجبور به فدا کردن برخی از سخت‌افزارهای دوربین شده است به عنوان مثال SL1 از باتری کوچک‌تری بهره می‌برد و همچنین بدنه کوچک‌تر باعث شده تا نتوان SL1 را به خوبی دوربین‌های SLR رایج بازار در دست گرفت. اما کیفیت عکس برداری و بازده دوربین فوق‌العاده است. در پشت SL1 یک LCD ثابت وجود دارد و شکل و شمایل کلی دوربین نیز شبیه به T4i است که کوچک شده باشد.
دوربین SL1 به یک سنسور 18 مگاپیکسل APS-C با فوکوس هیبریدی خودکار تجهیز شده و صفحه نمایش آن نیز لمسی است. SL1 در هر ثانیه تنها 4 عکس پشت سر هم میگیرد و فوکوس خودکار آن نیز به خوبی دوربین های حرفه‌ای DSLR عمل نمی‌کند اما این دوربین در بسیاری از موارد مناسب است و SL1 به عنوان یک دوربین DSLR رده میانی خوب عمل می‌کند.
